We are most fortunate in the Parish of Woolwich to have a number of organisations that share our churches with us. This helps us to have links with the wider community as well as with the organisations that share our buildings. This arrangement also helps us to cope with our financial outgoings. We are privileged to share our facilities with these organisations and we feel that, as part of the life of our parish, they should be included in this website. Working with Words seeks to make information easy to understand for people with learning difficulties. People with learning disabilities themselves work to make information easy to understand, using jargon-free language, colour, large text, symbols, photos and sound.

Our workers suggest the best wording, fonts, colours, images and layouts for documents. They receive support and training in computing and office work, which enables them to produce designs for clients. Our workers gain job transferable skills using standard office equipment and design software. The skills and experience they have gained at Working with Words enables them to take on paid employment.

Working with Words Ltd is a registered charity No.3564550 / Charity No. 1075001.

St Mary’s Under 5’s Creche serves pre-school children in the Woolwich area. We meet from Monday to Friday both in the morning (9.15-11.45am) and in the afternoon (12.30-2.30pm) in the specially adapted Crypt of St Mary Magdalene Church. Most of the children who come to us are from families who find it helpful to have help and support during the day, and some are referred to us by G.P.’s, Health Visitors, or Social Services. Many of the children who attend live in blocks of flats, and attending the Creche therefore gives them an opportunity to exercise, play, meet other children, and engage in educational activities. The Creche gives parents/carers an opportunity to meet each other when they drop off and collect their children and when they come to our Management Committee meetings. The Creche is run independently by its own qualified and experienced staff; but it is presently supported financially by the government agency ‘Sure Start’. The church also gives the facilities to the Creche at a minimal rent, as the Creche provides a valuable service to the community and seeks to cooperate with the church. Fees for the Creche are £2.50 pers session.

Every four to six weeks we have a Management Committee meeting, which all parents are encouraged to attend. Decisions made at these meetings affect all of the children who attend the Creche, whether they concern trips we area going on, new equipment, or ideas for fund raising events that are coming up. It’s a chance to meet other parents/carers and to make new friends. Ella is the Creche Co-ordinator and attends all the meetings so if you have any issues about the Creche they can be raised at these meetings. The Management Committee is made up of parents that attend the Creche, there is a Chairperson, a Secretary, and a Treasurer, all of whom are voted for annually by the parents. If you wish to be nominated for these positions please attend the meetings. We welcome all of your opinions and if you have any concerns about your child we will try to help, as we have many contacts with other agencys, for example speech and language experts.

The Creche has an agreed Discipline Policy copies of which can be obtained from Ella. We also have a Welcome Pack which is available for parents/carers of the children.

The contact details of the Creche are: St Mary’s Creche, St Mary Magdalene Church, Greenlaw Street, Woolwich, London, SE18 5AR. Creche Co-ordinator: Ella Carr 020 8316 0061.

The Deeper Life Bible Fellowship is a pentecostal church based in London. The main church and headquarters are in the Elephant and Castle and we have churches in other parts of South London too. We have a number of members living in the Woolwich area and therefore we decided to start a congregation here a few years ago. We meet twice during the week for bible study and worship at St Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Woolwich, and we have recently started a Sunday service at at 8.30am. Our congregation is separate from the Anglican congregation, but we have a very good working relationship with each other. The pastor of the congregation in Woolwich is Mr Godi. For further details please phone 01322-447199. The Deeper Life Christian Ministry also has a website which tells you about its UK and worldwide ministries: http://www.deeperlife-liverpool.org.uk/frame10.html .
