TEACHING theme in THE PARISH DURING 2008

THE APOSTLES AND DISCIPLES OF JESUS

Each month during 2008 we will concentrate in our worship on one of the disciples/apostles of Jesus. Although we often think of Jesus having 12 disciples, a more accurate count shows that he had 14 disciples (i.e. religious followers), who later also were regarded as his apostles (i.e. messengers or those who are sent). In addition, St Paul became the 15th apostle of Jesus (i.e. the apostle to the gentiles), and he is the one that we remember in the month of January. We will try to remember each apostle in the month that their saints day falls, however because there are 15 apostles we will in some months have to reflect on more than one apostle; and because their saints days are not equally spread throughout the year, one or two of the apostles have been allocated to months other than those in which they are normally remembered. In each month we will also reflect on the lives of two or three other disciples of Jesus from both ancient and modern times; some of whom are regarded as saints and some of whom are just Christians who led extraordinary lives. Over the year, will therefore be able to learn about many of Jesus disciples, and in this way reflect on the meaning of discipleship itself, to which all Christians are called. Because Jesus is normally remembered in the first week of January we will also reflect on the founder of our faith at the beginning of the year. The list below shows which apostles and disciples we will remember in each month of this year, and shows their normal saints days:
